Reading is our number one priority at Four Oaks and we always say that if children's reading improves, then so does everything else that they do. Reflecting this, we put a huge emphasis on the enjoyment of reading from the very moment that children step into our school in Reception, until the moment they leave at the end of Year 6 when we hope they take with them a love of reading that will last a lifetime!

In Reception, English is taught in many different ways. The teaching of reading and writing is developed alongside the great emphasis we place upon spoken language. We use the Bug Club scheme when teaching Phonics and for the acquisition of high frequency words.

Reading is taught using Bug Club Phonics texts which are fully decodable. Children also take part in a reading challenge which encompasses a range of texts which give the children a breadth of experience.

Through plays, poetry, assembly performances, debates, PowerPoint presentations and hot-seating children develop their oral skills.

Should children need extra support with their reading and writing, they are supported by a number of different interventions within their year groups.

Pupils at Four Oaks enjoy support from parents who give time to come into classes as well as supporting their children at home.
