The Red House Book Awards 2010

Recently a group of ten Year 6 pupils have been part of a special reading group put together by Mr Benton to test three new books which were contesting the Redhouse Book Awards for 2010. These children read all three books, decided which was their favourite and then Mr Benton cast their votes on the Redhouse website. As part of this project Four Oaks were very lucky this year to be offered three free tickets to the actual awards ceremony held at Birmingham Botanical gardens. All of the children's names went into a hat and two lucky girls were chosen to attend this star studded event. The two girls have written a great account of their exciting day and below it you can view some great photographs taken on the day !

On Saturday 22nd May we went to the Botanical Gardens to represent our school at The Red House Book Awards !

First of all we were welcomed with a tasty drink and a name badge outside the bar. Next, we were escorted into a grand room where we would meet the authors, have lunch, and where the ceremony would begin !

After that we realised the authors were sitting just ahead of us signing books for all the other people. We first of all went to find our table that we were sitting on. Our tbale was called 'Thread Bear' after the winner of the Red House Book award in 1991. On our table was a comedian, James Campbell, and he was very funny !

We got all the authors autographs, got a huge goody bag and had a fabulous conversation with Cathy Cassidy !

Our lunch was a three course meal and was extremely yummy. We had a range of fruit for starters, a choice of lasagne, meat or salad for mains, and strawberries with cream and chocolate for pudding - Yum Yum !

Later on, the awards began and Tanya Landman won the middle aged category. However, Suzanne Collins won over all, out of the three categories, with her amazing book 'The Hunger Games'. Finally, we had ice cream and a chat with the authors outside.

Notably we both had an awesome time and a great big thank you to Mr Benton who gave us this opportunity that we will always remember !

Well done girls, you were a great advert for our school !
