The Golden Mile
This week in school we marked the launch of our 'Golden Mile' project. This is a plan to get all our pupils and staff to walk, jog or run a distance of 50 miles during the timespan of a whole school year ! We have measured the perimeters of our playgrounds and the Junior playground is 160m around the edge and the Infant playground is 80m. This means that to walk one mile a pupil will have to walk around the junior playground 10 times and the Infant playground 20 times.
The children, during both curriculum time and playtime will be encouraged to complete circuits of their respective playgrounds and note down how many laps they do. Once a week this data will be collected by the class teachers and added to the Golden Mile website which will keep track of everyone’s progress.
Apart from becoming fitter, there are other incentives for the children in the form of certificates, which can be gained when they pass the milestones of 10 miles, 25 miles and finally 50 miles.
We officially launched the Golden Mile in an assembly on Monday 18th October when former Ryder Cup golfer Paul Broadhurst came to school in his role as an ambassador for the Golden Mile. Why not click on the photos below to see how some of our pupils started us on the long road towards our 50 mile targets or click here to view our story in the local press !
(Many thanks to Mrs Burgess who gave of her time so freely to come along and take these photographs)
